For Alban Eiler this year, we are proud to launch our newest tribute and design, Danu, the Irish mother goddess.

Danu (pronounced dawn-uh) is foremost the mother of the gods and goddesses of the Celtic pantheon along with her partner – the sacred oak (sometimes called ‘Bilé’ or the Oak King). This, and the fact that she is often portrayed as the Celtic triple goddess lead us to offer her in triple goddess form with two tree spirits or on her own as a beautiful, original, and uniquely hand-finished sculpture/tribute.

The ‘Tuatha Dé Danaan’ pronounced in Gaelic as “Too-ha de dan-an” is approximately translated into, ‘the tribe of Danu’. Where Danu came from is much debated, but it is clear that she is a primordial goddess of some significance.

Celtic deities were often geographic and worshipped according to their location. However, some gods and goddesses’ transcended locality and grew to be worshipped all over the continent of Europe from the Eastern Steps to the West Coast of Ireland. Danu was one such goddess.

In the mythological cycle, one of the four great cycles of Irish history, the Tuatha Dé Danaan landed in Ireland in around 1,000 BCE bringing with them the crafts and knowledge they had obtained from their all-powerful mother and father. Danu however can be traced back much further into the mists of time and creation itself.

When we work with Danu, the primordial goddess, we deepen our relationship to the ages old earth, the old ways and gods and goddesses and rituals and ceremonies that stretch back to beginning of the Celtic peoples, their tribes and their spirituality. We ask that all creatures share the earth in peace and harmony and work together wherever possible to heal us, our home and all our peoples.

She is unique in terms of our process. The main part of the statue and the triskelion are 3D printed and assembled. Then the metal and bronze leaves are added to her lower body and the base of the sculpture. Finally she is finished in a lifelike green patina with blue/white/black/silver accents. She stands about 12 cm high. Note that Danu is very much a work-in-progress and we are continuing to refine his features and finish based on customer feedback and our own progression of design and thought. There will be some variations in the future versions. We continue to update the listing as new works/photos are available.
