As the God of Beginnings and Endings the ancient Romans invoked Janus at the opening and closing of every ceremony making him ubiquitous to their practice. He was also heralded as the God of War and Peace and several enclosures dedicated to him with gates at each end are present in and around Rome.  The gates would be open during war and closed during peace.

Janus is typically depicted with two faces; a youthful visage looking ahead and an elder wiser one looking back. His other associations include: duality, doorways, frames, transitions and time itself.

January is named for Janus and  Romans would celebrate the new year with sacred vows and pledges made to the God to help them to change and set new goals for the year ahead.

We depicted Janus  moving through a doorway, looking forward as the young man and looking back as the elder. In his hand he holds a key to unlock the doors and all potential for transformation and change. We used an arched doorway called an  ianua in Latin  coming from the name of Janus.

Product Details: Our version of Janus stands 17 cm/7" high, 12 cm/5" wide, 12 cm/5" deep and weighs 250 gr/8 oz. He can be finished in either white faux marble or dark faux bronze and metallics.

All of our products are designed and individually 3D printed here in our home studio using a bio-safe, non-toxic, vegetable, wood fibre or sugar-cane based PLA. We then hand-finish each piece, usually smoothing and sanding them using a natural wood fibre material and then acrylic paints or glazes. The cured finishes are non-toxic but the metallic finishes do have the actual metals in them. This is a clean and local process and our materials are selected from those made in Canada or the USA. We are 100% NOT “Made in China” and take some pride in that. Through careful research and testing, we have found a great way to get around the toxic resin and moulding processes used in most of the statues on the market.
